Conrad Tao & Beethoven's “Eroica”

Went to the Pacific Symphony concert on a Saturday earlier this month.

The Saturday performance will broadcast on KUSC on Sunday, February 28 at 7 PM (PST).

Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.

Carl St.Clair conducted Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 with Conrad Tao, and Beethoven's Eroica Symphony.

In Alan Chapman's absence, assistant conductor Roger Kalia gave the pre-concert talk.
He interviewed principal oboist Jessica Pearlman and Conrad Tao.

Jessica debuted the symphony way back when Midori played Tchaikovsky.  I remember because we sat next to her dad.  He was so proud and relieved that she got a full time job.  :)

They talked about the auditioning practice of orchestras, which was quite interesting.  A tip for those pursuing a musical career:  during a blind audition, don't make a sound unless asked to, don't even talk, because that is going to give them some impressions, which may work against you.

And Conrad Tao first came as a substitute for Yuja Wang, playing the Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.  He said he liked these sub-gigs, because it gives him this sense of control.  (Kind of evil-ish.  :))

I think he has returned to the symphony every year since then.  He was so young back then, but now he's grown a beard!

Beethoven’s Ninth Connections

Went to the Pacific Symphony's opening Sunday Connections concert.

The Saturday performance will broadcast on KUSC on Sunday, February 7 at 7 PM (PST).

Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.

Even though it was Sunday, it was a full blown concert, themed with "getting along with your neighbors".

It started with The Star-Spangled Banner, not every day that you get to sing along with a full orchestra and chorus.  :)

The first half had a world premier by composer-in-resident Narong Prangcharoen, about Orange County!  I liked the part where he gets stuck on the 405 and you hear car horns, Doppler effect and everything.  I wonder if he listened to Rich Capparela's car tunes?  :)

The concert closed with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.  I think this is the third time I listened on the ninth on a Sunday concert, last time was in June 2012, they did a plaza-cast on the night concert that time.  Kevin Deas was bass-baritone back then as well!  He was so funny.  :)

Music director Carl St.Clair conducted with Mary Wilson (soprano), Milena Kitic (alto), John Bellemer (tenor), Kevin Deas (bass-baritone), and the Pacific Chorale.

Aaron Copland:  “The Promise of Living” from The Tender Land
Narong Prangcharoen:  Beyond Land and Ocean (World Premiere)

Tchaikovsky Spectacular

Went to the Pacific Symphony's final summer concert on Saturday.

An all-Russian concert ending with Tchaikovsky's 1812, we always look forward to this concert to close each year's summer.  :)

I had to pull up the two kids and our dinner up to the lawn seats.

(Monyo helped push the wagon up the last climb.)

Check one, the professionals setting up the fireworks.

Check two, The canons.

Check three, dinner, we are so ready!  :)

Music director Carl St.Clair conducted with Olga Kern at the piano.

We got a hot tip from Carl, they will be performing here next year as well!

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky:  Introduction and Waltz from The Sleeping Beauty
Igor Stravinsky:  Suite from The Firebird
Sergei Rachmaninoff:  Concerto No. 2 in C Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 18
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky:  1812 Overture, Op. 49, TH 49

After the concert, we watched Ormie to wait for the firework site to clear.

The kids didn't make it to the end...

They still fit nicely in the wagon.  :)

Bolero & Hot Latin Nights

Went to the Pacific Symphony's third summer concert on Sunday.
(disclosure)

The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater is now called the "Irvine Meadows Amphitheater".

From way up north, I took the 55-S to 5-S to 133-S to 405-S.

I got off immediately at the Irvine Center Drive and took a right.

The venue will be on your right.  :)

I went solo this time, so I took a lot of pictures.  :)

Right after you enter the gate, a concert was being performed on the left, I think they were the Huntington Beach Concert Band.

Normally, I will be pulling a wagon with two kids up to the venue.

First corner.  "Are we there yet?"  :)

Second corner.  "Are we there yet?"  :)

Here's another gate, that leads to the food trucks, etc.

The sign still says "Verizon Wireless"...

Today's seat was in the orchestra section, so I didn't have to climb up any stairs.

In fact, I climbed down!  :)

In case you want to get to the lawn seats, here's the stairway...

... that leads to a steeper slope ...

(Imaging pulling up a wagon full of dinner, snacks, etc.)

... and you are rewarded with a wonderful view.  :)

The concert started out with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34.

Music director Carl St. Clair lead the symphony on this familiar tune.

Next is the Ritual Fire Dance from El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla, the only Spaniard composer on this program!  :)

Mezzo-soprano Milena Kitić sang a few pieces from Georges Bizet's Carmen.

Her favorite is "Seguidilla", where Carmen seduces Don JosĂ© to free her from prison.  :)

Here's what the crowd looked like during intermission.

In the second half, the symphony was joined by John Tu and Friends.

Carl conducted Georges Bizet's work, Farandole from L’ArlĂ©sienne, Suite No. 2.

Continued on to America from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.

The baton was passed to Larry Ball, who conducted On Broadway, with Beau Williams singing.

Then came Bobby Rivas, and the Dances of Latin America!

Mas, que Nada (Samba)

Por una Cabeza (Tango)

Rico VacilĂ³n (Cha Cha)

LlorarĂ¡s (Salsa)

Ran Kan Kan (Mambo)

The dancers were Tara Ghassemieh, David Kim, Denys Drozdyuk, and Antonina Skobina.
(David Kim also danced Romeo in the classical concert series.)

To wind things down, John Tu conducted Maurice Ravel's Bolero.

And the concert ended with everyone on stage.

Daniel Flores's Tequila, where the audience joined in and shouted, "Tequila!".  :)
