I will sure miss him, but at least he's still going to do his Friday show from home. One thing's for sure, somebody needs to pick up all the ladders on the freeway! :)

Home Alone
Went to the Pacific Symphony's Pops series concert last Saturday night.
Richard Kaufman conducted the music of Home Alone, composed by John Williams. The CSU Fullerton University singers were also there. Also in the pit, tubist Jim Self himself! He played the tuba in the original movie. This is as authentic as you can get!
It was interesting to watch the conducting. There was a little screen behind the music stand, that showed the movie and also the measure and beat of the piece. When the orchestra was not playing, I guess Richard gets to enjoy the movie! :)
So it has been a long time since I first and last saw this movie. Must have been at least 20 years ago! :)
All I could remember was that he fought the burglars somehow, and the part with the tarantula. I couldn't remember any of the details, like how Kevin got left home alone in the first place, or the thing about his next door neighbor!

Kern Plays Rachmaninoff
Went to the Pacific Symphony's concert Saturday night. This is the first one in the 2016-2017 night series.
Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.
This performance will broadcast on Classical KUSC on February 5, 2017.
This season celebrates the 10 year anniversery of the Renee and Henry Segerstrom concert hall. If you have never heard a concert hear before, this is an awesome hall.
Music director Carl St. Clair conducted with pianist Olga Kern.
Antonin Dvořák: Carnival Overture, Op. 92
Sergei Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43
Conrad Tao: I got a wiggle that I just can’t shake (world premiere)
Ottorino Respighi: Pines of Rome, P. 141
We're used to seeing Conrad on stage sitting at the piano, but this time he composed the first work on the second half. He was here for the rehearsal, but couldn't be present due to an east coast Rach 3 concert. Who said the virtuoso composers are getting extinct? :)

KUSC's new playlist
KUSC's playlist got a new look! :)
I like the accordion style, you can collapse the shows that are not currently playing.
Looks like they still need to work on the past lists though...

There was even a PokeStop! :)
I will sure miss the concerts here. I hope the venue from next year will be close by (at least in Orange County).

Raiders of the Lost Ark
We went to the movies Saturday night. Not at the movie theater, but at the Pacific Symphony concert! :)
Can you believe this movie is 35 years old now!?
Guest conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos led the Pacific Symphony. I think Richard Kaufman conducted these movie concerts in the past, but I guess not this year.
Concertmaster Raymond Kobler was not on the members list! I knew about Bob and Russell, but this was a bolt from the blue...

Andre Watts Plays Beethoven
We went to the Pacific Symphony's open rehearsal, Saturday concert, and going again today for the Sunday concert! :)
The Saturday concert had a Plaza-cast, hosted by Rich Capparela. I didn't actually see him, but I'm glad he's OK, as I haven't heard Rich since the last KUSC membership drive.

Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.
Music director Carl St.Clair conducted with pianist André Watts.

The preview talk has given by Alan Chapman again. André Watts join in the second half, sharing his experience with the Beethoven 4th. And his performance was awesome!! I loved the cadenza, and looking forward to listening again on the KUSC broadcast. :)
The hall itself was themed with opium Symphonie Fantastique, and you could participate in Berlioz's world.
I couldn't tell who these two were. Maybe the artist and his love?
Dancers from the ball.
The shepherd.
The executioner.
The witch.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons
We went to the Saturday Pacific Symphony concert last night.
This performance will broadcast on KUSC on Sunday, July 24 at 7 PM (PST).
Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.
Music director Carl St.Clair conducted with violinist Philippe Quint, who also lead the Vivaldi.
Antonio Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, Op. 8
Richard Strauss: An Alpine Symphony, TrV 233, Op. 64
Assistant conductor Roger Kalia did the pre-concert lecture again, and interviewed Philippe Quint.
A student of Dorothy DeLay, Philippe shared some experiences about her teaching methods.
He said she was a great psychologist, and stayed very positive. For example, if she saw a problem with an intonation, she would ask "What is your concept of F#?". A sharp contrast from is experience in Russia, where there would be hollering, insulting, etc. Back there, he would hear stories of music flies out, the instrument flies out, and the student flies out. :)
Dorothy's students are also all unique, as she shared her knowledge without imposing her persona.
His performance was awesome, I haven't seen anybody play so happily since Itzhak Perlman!

Rhapsody in Blue Connections
We went to the Sunday connections concert by the Pacific Symphony.
Rose uses a special mouthpiece for her bassoon for this piece, because it has a c-sharp, a half note higher than the infamous opening of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring! It has a little hole on the top, which helps with the high notes.
The Saturday performance will broadcast on KUSC on Sunday, July 10 at 7 PM (PST). Didn't realize until Sunday morning, but they aired live on Saturday!!
Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.
Music director Carl St.Clair conducted with pianist Simone Dinnerstein.
Maurice Ravel: Concerto in G Major for Piano and Orchestra
George Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue
There was a pre-concert lecture by artistic adviser Joseph Horowitz and Professor Wendy Salmond from Chapman University. They discussed Gershwin the artist (as in painter). Seems like he had lots of talents! Also found out that Joseph Horowitz wrote a book about Gershwin.
During the performance, Carl talked with Simone, and other musicians like principal harpist Mindy Ball and principal bassoonist Rose Corrigan. Here's some trivia for you. :)
Asked about the second movement of the Ravel, Simona said the composer might have been inspired by the Russian electronic instrument, Theremin, for the trills.
And of course, the usual suspects, Sati and Mozart.
Rose uses a special mouthpiece for her bassoon for this piece, because it has a c-sharp, a half note higher than the infamous opening of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring! It has a little hole on the top, which helps with the high notes.
Mindy played the harp cadenza from the Ravel piece and gave a small lecture on the harp. She had to tune an extra harp for this! This is one reason we go to the Sunday concerts, even if we attend the preceding night concert as well,
This concert's Rhapsody in Blue is Ferde Grofé's version, equipped with 3 saxophones and a banjo.
Simone & bass clarinetist Joshua Ranz played Rhapsody in Blue 30 years ago in a trio for a piano competition.
Talking about the various candenzas, Simone said her challenge was to play it as if it was improvised.

Dancing with the Stars
We were invited to the Pacific Symphony's Cafe Ludwig concert on Sunday from our friends, and it was an awesome concert! :)
Pianist Orli Shaham hosted this chamber music event, themed with "dance", and everybody was dancing to the music (just kidding). The pastry was delicious, too.
The first half was very contemporary. Principal cellist Timothy Landauer opened the concert with Kodály's Cello sonata with his lower two strings "prepared" a half note lower.
Followed by Adams' work, with a live "prepared" piano! The piano had lots of gadgets attached to make funny sounds, which is usually played with just a recording. She said before the piece that you will rarely hear the piano play a "piano" sound, but all I could tell was the first "A" to tune the quartet!
The second half was more "classical". Orli and principal trumpeter Barry Perkins started with three works for piano and trumpet. Apparently, it's very difficult to find chamber music for trumpet. :)
Followed by Brahms's waltzes, and finished with the Strauss' Kaiser Waltz, arranged by Schoenberg for a septet.
Zoltán Kodály: Sonata in B Minor for Solo Cello, Op. 8
John Adams (arr. Frisch): Suite from John’s Book of Alleged Dances for String Quartet and Prepared Piano
Leonard Bernstein: Rondo for Lifey
Maurice Ravel: Pièce en forme de Habanera for Trumpet and Piano
Astor Piazzola (arr. Mahpar): Milonga del ángel
Johannes Brahms: Waltzes for Solo Piano, Op. 39

The Saturday performance will broadcast on KUSC on Sunday, March 20 at 7 PM (PST).
Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.
Music director Carl St.Clair conducted with the Pacific Chorale and the Southern California Children’s Chorus.
Giacomo Puccini: Turandot
Princess Turandot: Tamara Mancini, soprano
Calàf: Marc Heller, tenor
Liù: Elizabeth Caballero, soprano
Timur: Hao Jiang Tian, bass

Pang: Jonathan Blalock, tenor
Pong: David Blalock, tenor
Emperor Altoum: Ronald Naldi, tenor
The Mandarin: Zachary Altman, baritone
The Executioner: Melody Yao, dancer
Supers: Jestoni Dagdag, Issac Lai
Some fun stuff from Alan Chapman's pre-concert lecture.
Marc Heller came and talked without using the microphone, because it might mess with his voice.
Found out that both were married to a Soprano, and they exchanged a couple tenor/soprano jokes.
Alan: What's the difference between a soprano and a pit bull? Jewelry.
Marc: There once was a tenor so stupid the other tenors noticed.
Alan: Various degrees of adjectives in Italian: Stupido - Stupidissimo - Tenore.
Singers have to be very protective of their "instrument". Part of preparation of the instrument is to let go of nerves. It actually help to come in front of the audience before the performance.
They also have to combat the dryness. The symphony staged Marc's room with humidifiers and water. :)

They are also going to be playing on Sunday at 3 PM, same place, along with two more organists.
It was a real privilege to hear a world premiere before the public. :)
If you like contemporary classical music, this piece is for you. If you are a more "classic" classical music lover, the Lauridsen piece will surely get you nice and relaxed.
I'm just going to say that the Pilgrim’s Hymn was a totally different experience. You'll have to see for yourself.
I can't wait to hear it again on Saturday!! :)

Mozart: Symphony No. 35, “Haffner”
I think this is the first time the Sunday concert was hosted by somebody other than Carl. The staff wasn't sure, but they said he might be in Costa Rica.
We first saw Cho-Liang Lin on a Sunday concert way back in 2007, when it was called "Classical Connections". I remember him talking about the choice of the D key in violin concertos, double bowing, etc.
