Romeo & Juliet Reimagined

Went to see the Pacific Symphony concert last Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday performance will broadcast on KUSC on Sunday, July 12 at 7 PM (PST).

Listen to Alan Chapman's preview on SoundCloud.

Musical director Carl St.Clair conducted the "happy ending" version of Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet.

The concert started with an all star Vivaldi quadruple violin concerto and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations.

Vivaldi must be my favorite baroque composer.

Stravinsky is often misquoted as saying, "Vivaldi only wrote one concerto, but he wrote it 500 times."

He actually said he was amazed that Vivaldi was able to write in the same form (fast - slow - fast) over and over and not be stifled by it.

They may all sound the same, but I can't get enough of them.  :)

Another fun thing I got from Alan Chapman's pre-concert lecture, there's a potato named after Vivaldi, because it is available all "four seasons".

Timothy Landauer is one of our favorite members in the symphony.

We first saw him as a soloist when he played Vivaldi's double cello concerto with Bobby McFerrin, back in 2008.

The concert's main piece, and the subject of the matinee concert, was Romeo & Juliet, with the "happy ending".

The concert had actors and dancers, and they were still dancing at the end.  :)

I haven't really listened to the main stream version of the ballet, so I can't compare the music, but it was fun to watch.

The experience could have been better if they had super-titled the actor's dialog, since "I dost not speak archaic English!"
